Maria Christina Chatziioannou

Maria Christina Chatziioannou is Research Director Emerita (2022) and former Director of the Institute of Historical Research at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (IHR/NHRF) (2019 -2022). She studied at the Department of History and Archaeology, University of Athens, and at the Scuola di Perfezionamento di Storia Medioevale e Moderna, Universita di Sapienza, Rome.

She has taught postgraduate and undergraduate courses at the Universities of Athens and Crete, as well as the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. Her publications focus on social and economic history (18th-20th centuries), with an emphasis on diaspora and trade networks, economic history of the Mediterranean world (markets, sovereign debts), biography and entrepreneurs, and the history of Risorgimento.

She served as coordinator of the national program “ANAVATHMIS. Development of historical research: studies and digital applications” at IHR/NHRF (2017-2020), as well as other research programs and projects funded by Greek and European institutions. She co-organized summer schools with York University in Toronto (2018, 2019, 2023).

She has participated in the organizational and scientific committees of Greek and international history conferences. She was a member of the editorial board of the journal The Historical Review/La Revue Historique, IHR/NHRF (2012-2022) and curated the series Historical Library 1821 (10 volumes) at IHR/NHRF.
